PURPOSE & PRINCIPLES
AF Ensemble is a foundation created by Ard Huizing (A.) and Frances de Rijck van der Gracht (F.).
“Its purpose is twofold. The foundation first of all aims to amplify the impact of art by annually awarding a moment of schoonheid (beauty) as it may be experienced in the fields of visual art, performance art, and contemporary dance. It secondly commissions new art projects together with the artist(s) who created the moment of schoonheid, in order to propel that moment into the future. So, AF Ensemble does not award persons, objects, sounds, places, images or ideas - it celebrates and shares moments of schoonheid.”
AF Ensemble Manifesto by Ard Huizing
HOW AF ENSEMBLE WORKS
Once in the three years, the AF Ensemble board awards an artwork in which they recognise and share a moment ofschoonheid, as described by Ard Huizing in his manifesto that forms the foundation of AF Ensemble. The award comprises a commission for a new art project. Together with the artist(s) from whose work the moment ofschoonheid has sprung, the board will formulate a commission based on the awarded artwork. The aim of the commission is to amplify the moment of schoonheid and to allow it to further resonate into the future.
During these three years the board members inform each other when they encounter an artwork that in their experienceis a moment of schoonheid. The board gathers at least three times a year. The selection of the awarded moment of schoonheid will be made during one of these meetings. All board members can propose a moment of schoonheid for the award. The final selection of the awarded piece has to be made unanimously by the board. The board has the right to postpone the selection when the right moment of schoonheid has not occurred yet.
The founders' wish was to capture ‘moments of schoonheid’ into a commission that is of value to the artist, thefoundation and hopefully all who encounter it. Their intention was to provide the funds needed for the commission to be realised and didn’t set a specific amount for this. Creating an impact with the philosophy andthe commissions is more important than the (financial) stability and duration of the Foundation. At the outset, the size of the commission will be between €20.000 and €100.000 including the artist fees. As the commissionand careers of the artists may differ considerably, the board will be open to what is financially needed to realise the project.
Once the board and artists have agreed on a commission, this will be confirmed with a project proposalconsisting of a description of the commission and its goals, budget and timeline. This document functions as astarting point and guideline for the collaboration between the board and artist(s). An additional signed agreement will be made for both parties, containing the legal and financial conditions of the award and the commission. The artists have the responsibility to keep the board members up to date regarding the development of the commission. This does not follow a specific format or rhythm, it depends on what thecommission entails and requires and how the artist(s) and board members wish to collaborate.
Ard Huizing’s research into the value of art forms the backbone of the foundation. He shared this interest and research with the board members Stephanie Schuitemaker, Berber Meindertsma and Nathanja van Dijk through in-depth conversations, visiting art exhibitions and installations together and reading and discussing books and texts. In an effort to continue Ard’s unbridled curiosity and sharp-edged thinking, as well as to inspire others withhis philosophy, the board aims to publish an article related to the selected work which conveys the theory and ideas upon which the AF Ensemble is built.
